meet the father

Melissa and I have two wonderful children, Tori and Chaz. One Saturday afternoon, when Chaz was around eight years old, we were wrestling on the bed. I picked him up high over my head and body slammed in the center of the bed. The second he landed I jerked him back up and threw him down again. Chaz would hold his breath on the way down then burst out laughing when he hit the mattress. Over and over I picked him up and threw him down. Eventually he was tired from laughing and I was beat from lifting. We both fell back on the bed next to each other, totally exhausted. After I caught my breath I said, “Chaz, if God told me that I could have one boy, and only one boy… You know what I would do?” He looked over at me, grinning he asked, “What?” I said, “I would round up all the boys from all over the entire world. Then I would look over each and every one of them carefully. And after I met them all, I would say to God, ‘Lord, please give me this one.’” And I put my finger right in the center of Chaz’s chest.

What he said after that surprised me. He turned his head away and said, “DANG IT!”

Then he sat up in the bed, put his head in his hands, and he said, “Dad, that’s going to make me cry.” And he started balling – I’m talking big-time-monster-tears crying. I was totally blown away by his reaction. But before I could say anything, he turned around, put his nose right against mine, grabbed both my ears, and eyeball to eyeball, he said, “I love you Dad.”

Later that night I couldn’t help but to think about how Chaz responded to my love. And all I could think about is how wildly our Heavenly Father loves us. Do you realize God is in love with you? God does not hate you. As a matter of fact, the Bible says, “While we were sinners far away from God, Jesus died for us.” The question that really concerns me is, "Why do so many people fail to respond to God’s love the way Chaz responded to mine?" Listen; no matter where you are right now, you have a Heavenly Father who loves you. He’s just waiting for you to reach up, pull close to His face, and love Him back. John 1:12 says, “But as many as received Him (Jesus), to them He gave the right to become children of God…”
